Emily left her job on the Lower Mainland as a private care aid to pursue her Health Care Assistant certification at Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo. After graduation on August 3, 2017, she was able to find temporary employment until August 31st.
One month later, she moved to Victoria, hoping to find work in the larger market. She initially approached WorkBC/GT Hiring Solutions for help with her resume, to use the computers and to get job search help. She attended several GT Hiring workshops and job fairs, and dedicated herself to her job search.
Emily says of the resource centre coordinator she worked with, “I observe her gentle, calm demeanor in the resource room. She has a special way to make everyone feel important and valued. Looking for a job can be emotionally tough on the most positive person. Her warmth, her smile and exceptional disposition make all this seem like nothing.”
Working with her employment advisor, Emily received bus tickets and an outfit for interviews. “I landed a job soon after being in Victoria. I was then blessed with a voucher to buy some new scrubs, new shoes and socks.”
Emily is working casual with an assisted living facility in Victoria and continues to access the WorkBC resource centre to search for fulltime employment. With her positive attitude and work ethic, she has a bright future.
